The early deer season is
fast approaching and now is the
time to spend time in the
field scouting and placing your deer scouting trail cameras. You should
be planting
your fall food plots if you live in the North and be working the ground
in preparation
if you live in the South. If you are managing established food plots
cool season
perennials you may need to mow them to initiate new growth. It is a
busy time of
year if you are a deer manager and hunter.
Deer Scouting trail
cameras should be placed in all your
survey locations to
determine your sex ratios as well as number of mature bucks that you
have using
your habitat. Our biologists are busy this time of year determining the
animal unit
months or carrying capacity for the habitat of our cooperators and
clients. We try to
use the same locations each year for our surveys and we use the same
attractant C'
mere Deer with same bait to get relatively consistent results. This
information will
be used to set the antlerless harvest goals for property.
Deer Scouting Trail
Cameras should also be used by
hunters who are going to hunt
public lands as well. Establishing travel corridors that bucks use to
and from
bedding areas will pay big dividends during the early bow season. Again
you should
consider using a deer attractant like C'mere Deer that does not leave
it presence on
the ground for other hunters to observe. In addition you should do a
good job of
hiding your trail camera as camera thieves may take or destroy your
equipment.
When purchasing new trail cameras you should select the camera with the
highest
pixel count available. Even more important is to select a camera with
infrared flash.
The use of white flash will alert more than deer and attract someone
who may steal
or damage your camera. In addition flashless Deer Scouting trail
cameras are also
useful in solving poaching and trespass problems.
Late summer is a busy
time for the hunter and deer land
manager. It is just another
phase of deer hunting. Get your trail cameras in the woods. For the
dedicated deer
hunter the season never closes it just gets better and better.
